AI, craft and IP: building India's creative-tech workforce
AnimationXpress reports on how artificial intelligence is reshaping animation, VFX and gaming in India, with the sector facing a challenge beyond technology adoption: developing skilled professionals who can use these tools effectively and build intellectual property that reaches global audiences. According to the Ficci-ey report, India's media and entertainment industry reached Rs 2.78 lakh crore in 2025, growing 9 per cent year on year, with digital advertising at Rs 94,700 crore.
Animation and VFX saw more modest growth. Abir Aich, executive vice president for technical M&E at Aptech, argues that "the opportunity is large, though growth is not the same across every part of the sector." He emphasises that AI can accelerate production and help teams explore new directions, but producing something faster only works if it serves the creative brief and connects with audiences.
Aich stresses that professionals need to understand their discipline, solve problems and guide AI tools effectively. Aptech is integrating emerging technology into its Maac and Arena Animation training programmes, bridging the gap between classroom learning and production workflows through live briefs, mentoring and portfolio reviews, with faculty kept connected to evolving industry practices.
